In deep midsummer, in a world far gone from all memory, two identical sisters were born and set in motion a series of events that would change the course of their lives, and the fate of a kingdom, forever. Aidan, a spirited young woman who wants nothing more than a cause worth fighting for, grows up in the forest as the daughter of a mage. Evina, the twin separated from her at birth, is taken in by the beautiful fairy queen of Avalon and becomes every bit the princess her kingdom expects. When Aidan discovers the truth, she embarks on a journey to find her long-forgotten sibling, with the help of a few unexpected friends. Encountering danger and magic beyond their wildest imaginations, the travelers must unite to reach Avalon and face the past. But dark forces are gathering that threaten to engulf them all in a decades-long feud, and before journey’s end, their tale will take an ominous turn. When the time comes, will Aidan and Evina find the strength within themselves to protect the people they have come to love?

A must-read for fans of Juliet Marillier, Lynn Kurland, or basically any fantasy epics that feature strong female leads. I can't wait to read more from this author, and since there is a planned prequel hopefully I won't have to!

The Plot (no spoilers!):

The story opens as the two infant sisters are left on opposite ends of an enchanted forest, and from there their paths diverge even further. While Evina is taken in by the fairy queen of Avalon and her retinue, Aidan is found by a mage woman and raised in a village far from the grandeur of the fairy court.

Evina's fate may seem the more enviable one, but being the privileged heir to the Avalon throne has its own set of difficulties. Although she strives to be the kind of leader that her people deserve--strong and merciful, wise and benevolent like her mother--Evina fears that she can never live up to their expectations, at least not without losing herself in the process. The only person she can talk to about these doubts is her childhood friend Irial, a simple woodsmith with his own inner demons to combat as an orphan of the recent war with Milesia. This relationship is changing, however, as their friendship grows into something deeper--even as the gulf between their stations becomes more apparent. Then fate intervenes in a dark and unexpected twist, and Evina must put aside her fears if she has any hope of saving the kingdom she calls home.

Meanwhile, Aidan grows into a fiery young woman whose restless need for adventure lands her in constant pratfalls, despite the guidance of her adoptive mother and her good-natured friend Fia. When Aidan's adoptive mother discovers her connection to the princess, she also warns Aidan that her sister will soon be forced to confront a darkness that threatens all of Avalon. Aidan realizes that this is the adventure she has been waiting for her entire life. She sets out with Fia to reunite with her sister, in the hopes that together they can help avert the coming crisis. Along the way they enlist the help of Ronan, who proves a vital asset but carries with him the marks of a dark and painful past. Can he be trusted? And can their ragtag group hope to make a difference in the coming battle?

The Pros:

Fully fledged, nuanced characters. The two heroines were completely relatable, and it was painful to see them undergo the kind of hardships that they're forced to endure over the course of the novel, but it made every triumph that much more satisfying. Even the characters that I absolutely hated had enough depth and complexity that I could understand, if not relate, to them.

The world of Avalon. It's sketched in brief but evocative details, and draws from Celtic myth to give the reader a distinct sense of time and place.

The pacing. The action begins within the first few chapters and hardly lets up, although Aidan's story does give the reader more opportunities to breathe and fully immerse themselves in the world and its characters. But even in these slower portions there is a sense of momentum, all leading to a climactic finish that had me on the edge of my seat.

The romance! If Aidan wasn't such a kickass heroine I would definitely battle her over Ronan, he's THAT dreamy.

The Cons:

The prequel isn't out yet!

I loved loved loved this book! The characters were incredibly well written and the story kept me so engrossed that I neglected my family on vacation just to keep reading! Wren Cherney is an amazing author and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work!
I laughed, I cried, got pissed, and fell in love! This is my favorite book! These characters were so well written that I became invested in them. Wether I hated them, loved them, or wanted to be them. I recommend this book to everyone. Go read it! NOW! You'll thank me later!
This was a beautiful book full of love, loss, family, friends, magic, violence and deception. Beautifully and creatively written. I spent hours late into the night engrossed in this book. Cherney is very talented and I can't wait to read more of her work! I hope there will e a movie of this book and maybe a sequel? Love, love, love this! Buy it now!
I literally couldn't put it down once I started reading it....which made for an extremely unproductive day at work!! Wonderful story that emotionally connected me with the characters. This book made me hate how fast of a reader I am, because while I like to find out what happens next -- it meant that the story was over far too quickly! Looking forward to the next work from Ms. Cherney.
"A Fateful Magic" is a wonderful story that is beautifully worded and keeps you captivated from beginning to end. Each of the characters are so unique and relatable that its not hard to love all of them. It has adventure, love, war, friendship, sacrifice-just about everything a good book has. I would definitely recommend this book to any of my friends looking for a good read. It's definitely worth it.
I recently finished reading this book and wow, I loved it! The characters are very well portrayed and expressed in a way that makes you really care about and feel what the character is thinking. Love, danger, adventure, action, its all here intertwined with a wonderful story that leaves you very satisfied. I would say more but I definitely do not want to give any spoilers away so I'll hold back!

I cant wait to read another book by this wonderful new author, overall I highly recommend this book! 5 stars!
A friend passed this book on to me and told me I would love it. I wasn't sure I would have time to read it (because I have a new baby) so I told her I would try and get it back to her within a month.

Well....I started it 6pm and I did not stop until 1am. The story and characters are so captivating that I could not put it down. I just had to read one more chapter. Need less to say, I finished it in 24 hours and shocked my friend. I now have purchased a copy for my sister for Christmas. And I am sure she is going to love it.

This is a wonderful adult book! It has everything you could love about a book, Strong dynamic characters, evil villains, great supportive characters and a love story so pure and simple. Its not sappy or teen love drama but instead its filled with events and emotions that propel you through the world of "A Fateful Magic".

Thanks to Ms. Cherney and I can't wait to see what else come from your imagination.
